Cloud is the latest hype in the IT market, but, in contrast with other hyped initiatives, cloud is actually happening. Getting to grips with the ins and outs of cloud for businesses can be tricky, as Mette Ahorlu, Research Director, IDC UK, explains.
Unfortunately, players in the market talk about cloud in different ways, spreading more confusion than clarity. One reason for the confusion is that cloud is not a technology, but a way of consuming, or getting access to, IT. Of course, it is underlying technologies that make the cloud model possible, such as virtualisation, automation and broadband availability. One big benefit of cloud is that companies need not necessarily know about the technologies.
