Software-Defined Networking

Abstract

Software-defined networking (SDN) promises to reduce both CapEx and OpEx in cloud data center networks. Because of this, the industry is rapidly developing new standards, such as OpenFlow, to support SDN. In this chapter, we provide a brief background on the current state of data center software and introduce the concept of the software-defined data center. We then provide some details behind OpenStack and OpenFlow which are two key open industry standards used for SDN. Next, we describe a new industry initiative which is emerging to provide network functions using standard server hardware call network function virtualization.
