Signals delivered by radiation sensors are often weak, and in some cases they may contain only a few hundred electrons. Such small pulses can be easily over-shaded by the intrinsic current and voltage fluctuations occurring in the read-out circuitry. It is therefore not surprising that many studies have been done to understand the causes and minimize the effects of front-end electronic noise. In this book, we will be mainly concerned with noise arising from unavoidable physical phenomena, whose effects can not be entirely suppressed, but only minimized by appropriate signal processing techniques.
