Discriminators

In the field of radiation detectors, current and voltage comparators are often called discriminators to emphasize their function of separating the signal from the unwanted background. Fast and high accuracy comparators can be built using positive feedback circuits, periodically enabled and reset by a clock. These synchronous comparators are systematically employed in the implementation of Analog to Digital Converters (ADC) and in many other analog systems and are the baseline choice for high performance design. The literature on comparators is thus mostly focused on clocked topologies.
