Situation

Many of us have rhythms and routines about where and when we think we learn best. These habits can build up over years so we perhaps miss opportunities that might enrich our life experience of learning. Patterns developed in childhood about what are suitable places for learning can focus us on what happens in a classroom, lecture theatre, library, or study. But learning can and does happen in all manner of seemingly unlikely contexts and places and often takes us by surprise. In this chapter, we explore ways in which situations can enable learning. Complex systems offer a wide range of physical and emotional landscapes through which we travel and learn about ourselves and the world in which we co-design.
