The Idea

The idea we are considering in this chapter is the very notion of ideas. What are they? Why do we have them? What purpose do they serve? We want to consider how ideas help us to live—both individually and collectively—and explore what role ideas play in the co-design of systems. To do this, we need to draw on a range of perspectives from neuroscience, design, and organizations. Ideas have a mysterious quality. They emerge from within us like a flash of light or a ripple on a pond, but they also correspond to our sensory experience and memories of the world.
