Let me tell you a story
My new office at the University turned out to be located at the end of a very long corridor, just around a corner and off the beaten track. It was perfectly pleasant with a view of willowy trees growing in the courtyard. The furniture was fairly new, and the phone looked as though I would need a training manual just to understand the many buttons. I sat and pondered asking myself if I had made a big mistake. No induction program had been organized, no warm welcome, and no idea where I could make myself a cup of coffee. No sign of colleagues in the corridor. My heart began to sink. Had I made the right career move? Will I ever settle here?
