I know so much about the many ways agile coaches fail because I have failed by falling into the trap of every one of them presented in this chapter. I know a lot about agile coach success factors, too, because I have picked them up from watching others coach successfully, and I have asked those same coaches to tell me what I do that helps teams outperform even their wildest imaginings. (I often can’t see that myself.) Over time, I have categorized common failures and successes as ways of operating, or modes. This chapter presents the various failure and success modes I have cataloged so that you can consider how they operate in your coaching.
