I use a couple of learning platforms, but I'm on O'Reilly more than anybody else. When you're there, you start learning. I'm never disappointed.I'm always learning. So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

Ein Datenfeld ist ein Teil des Hauptspeichers, der zur Aufnahme von Daten vorgesehen ist. Aus der Sicht eines COBOL-Programms ist das Datenfeld, syntaktisch gesehen, ein symbolischer Name, der nach bestimmten Regeln und mit bestimmten Eigenschaften definiert wird. Die Eigenschaften eines Feldes werden durch Vergabe von bestimmten Klauseln festgelegt.
In modernen Programmiersprachen definiert man Attribute und lokale Variable. Diese werden oft nur mit ihrem Typ wie Integer oder String deklariert. In COBOL ergibt sich der Datentyp aus der PICTURE-Klausel. Dort wird auch immer die Größe eines Feldes definiert. Anders als in modernen Programmiersprachen haben COBOL-Datenfelder immer eine feste Länge.
