The 1917 Zimmermann Telegram (Figure 7-1), whose solving changed the course of World War I, was a secret diplomatic note sent by the German secretary of state, Arthur Zimmermann, to Mexico in January 1917. It proposed a military alliance between Germany and Mexico in the event that the United States entered the war against the Germans.1 The telegram was surreptitiously intercepted in England and forwarded to British cryptanalysts, who succeeded in breaking it. Revelation of the contents enraged Americans and helped generate support within the United States (which had thus far been neutral) for declaring war on Germany. ...
