2.5. Application to Wired and Wireless Cognitive Networks
This section will show how the FOCALE architecture can be used in cognitive networks by looking at Motorola's Seamless Mobility initiative (http://www.motorola.com/content.jsp?globalObjectId=6611-9309). For other connotations of seamless mobility, please see http://w3.antd.nist.gov/seamlessandsecure.shtml. This initiative aims to deliver a continuity of experiences across different domains, networks and devices. FOCALE is used to distribute intelligence by augmenting sensor data with important semantics. These semantics include learning and reasoning mechanisms to enable the system to hypothesize and infer what is happening and what should be done to protect business goals and objectives. The FOCALE architecture is easily scalable by using a common building block (the ACE) as a means to provide an autonomic interface for managed elements that have no inherent autonomic capabilities. Since each ACE has the same management interface, governance actions can be easily distributed.
2.5.1. Seamless Mobility
Seamless mobility is motivated by several forces. First, networks and technologies are converging, and will end up providing a single, inclusive seamless experience. This has given rise to more powerful devices that can themselves create a wide variety of different networks – from personal area networks centered in a car to mobile ad hoc networks that are formed and dissolved when needed. Second, everything is being digitized, ...
