Strategy First
The goal for using any software, tool, or technique should be to achieve a business objective. By itself, “collaboration” is a weak goal. It makes sense to think that collaboration tools will improve collaboration across your project teams, but that doesn’t automatically lead to better project success rates.
A better goal would relate to improved project outcomes. Defining your goals and understanding what you want from a collaboration tool is part of setting a strategy.
In this chapter, we’ll look at how you can develop a strategy and define the requirements you need from a tool. This covers the first three boxes in Figure 6.1, which shows the process of getting from strategy to benefits.
