Introduction

This chapter investigates the possibilities of investing in stamps. We would say at the outset that investment comes in two different forms. First, there is investment for investment's sake, whereby stamps are part of what are known as alternative assets. The second version of investing is the increase in value that comes as a by-product of collecting. This chapter discusses both. The approach that we take is that of financial economics. We assume that the reader has some familiarity with the subject, but we try to provide definitions where appropriate, to make the chapter as self-contained as possible.
