GHOSN FIGHTS BACK

On January 8, 2019, a quintessential Japanese winter morning with biting cold, electric-blue skies, buses with blacked-out windows rolled through the checkpoint of the Tokyo District Court, one after another. The fortress-like tower in the capital city’s government-office district stands at the symbolic nexus of Japanese social authority. A block away is the moat-ringed Imperial Palace, seat of the Yamato Dynasty, the world’s oldest unbroken monarchy dating back some 2,600 years. Next door is the country’s original red-brick Justice Ministry building, a nineteenth-century edifice designed by German architects that embodies Japan’s rushed, if somewhat reluctant, adoption of Western ways in its race to modernize.
