On November 19, 2018, right when prosecutors were setting their trap for Ghosn at Tokyo’s Haneda airport, his number two, a poker-faced Hiroto Saikawa, convened the regular monthly operations committee on the top floor of Nissan’s world headquarters. After ticking off the routine agenda items with his four top lieutenants, Saikawa suddenly veered from business as usual.

“He said, ‘Okay, let’s make a break,’” recalled one executive who was at the meeting. “Saikawa called all the executive committee members into a meeting room by his office one floor down. He called us to give us the news before it broke in the press.”
