Colour naming for colour communication

Abstract:

Existing research in colour naming has been mostly focused on a small number of basic colour categories rather than towards the development of more subtle colour identifications. This often leads to an over-saturation in the use of ‘basic’ colour schemes and can limit the differentiation of new ideas. In this chapter, we present the findings of a free colour naming experiment which has been designed to collect multilingual colour names with their corresponding metric values. The data gathered are being used for the development of a colour naming model that facilitates colour communication within and between different cultures.
