Business Transactions
Most enterprise applications involve two distinct types of items, payment and goods or services. A customer might order an item such as a CD via a Web page. The customer then might enter his credit card number to pay for the CD. An invoice or receipt, which can be printed out, is generated in the Web browser. The Web application then indicates that the transaction is a success.
In database applications, a transaction is an action taken by a program that affects at least two pieces of shared data bound by a business rule.
