Chapter 4Printing with CUPS

This chapter shows how to submit, query, and cancel print jobs to different printers. It also shows how to configure popular applications to print through CUPS.

Printing Files

Unlike legacy printing systems, CUPS supports printing many different types of files directly out of the box. For example, without CUPS you might have to load a PDF file into Acrobat Reader or Xpdf to print it. With CUPS you just print the PDF file directly!

CUPS provides both the System V (lp) and Berkeley (lpr) printing commands. Type one of the following commands to print a file to the default (or only) printer on the system:

lp filename ENTERlpr filename ENTER
