As well as the sights in and from their bodies, human beings also fashion external visible objects, from monocles to pictures, from house decoration to print. The body is itself, as we have seen, a work of art, and there is of course no sharp line between the embodied communication of the last chapter and the constructed sights less directly located in our bodies. But we do need to take special account of the striking human practice of creating prolific external arts and artefacts, linked perhaps to our visual acuity, tactile efficiency, and the upright posture which gives our hands their freedom.
