The human species, then, communicates through a complex mix, organised through the long recognised human senses, above all vision and audition and the objects related to these. All this is part of the accepted natural world of communication, no matter of mystery.

But what if there is more? Some would say so, or at least ask the question. This leads into a difficult and deeply contentious area. But it is also one in which there is an established cross-cultural literature stretching back centuries.1 If we want a full understanding of how humans do, or at least think they do, communicate, it is clearly one that must be considered.
