Chapter 5

Being in the room but not present

Abstract

Anti-pattern 3 examines being in the room but not present to collaborate with your team. Changing demands in the ways and frequency with which we interact with our colleagues and stakeholders is rapidly changing with the introduction of new digital development methodologies like Agile and Lean Startup. This new emphasis on continuous collaboration requires designers to change the way they work, keeping up with the buzz in the room instead of finding space to quietly concentrate. Anti-patterns emerge that signal unwelcome distraction and unwillingness to participate. Patterns to resolve this issue include tactical solutions to balance availability and personal space.
