Abstract: This Handbook focuses on the role of interpersonal communication in the teaching-learning process. In this introductory chapter, the Editor outlines the general structure of the volume, including a brief overview of each of the sections beginning with historical and theoretical foundations and progressing to instructor characteristics and actions, followed by student characteristics and attitudes. The next sections focus on pedagogical issues and the teaching and learning of communication across the lifespan.
