4 Bar code and data matrix technology

The use of bar coding principles is progressively spreading throughout the communications industry. The applications range from component identification, product serial numbers, books and service manuals, the control of library systems for video cassettes and the programming of video recorders, through to personnel security badges. With minor variations for in-house applications, all the code formats in use are based on the European and Japanese Article Numbering (EAN/JAN) Associations and the American Universal Product Code (UPC) standards.
