Wideband communications applications have traditionally used analogue signal processing, primarily for reasons of bandwidth conservation and the fact that the technology is matured and well understood. However, each application tends to be unique in certain ways. When such systems are concentrated into integrated circuits (ICs) these devices become specialised, relatively few are made, and so their costs are higher than they would be if mass produced.
