29 Radar, navigation and tracking systems
RAdio Direction And Ranging (RADAR) and direction finding (DF) systems function in a complementary manner. A radar system is used by a base station to locate a traveller’s relative position, while a DF system is used by the traveller to determine its position relative to the location of the base station (see also Satellite systems, p. 295.)
A radar system relies on the reception of a reflected signal from a given target, while a DF system operates by receiving a signal direct from a transmitter. Due to the dual path length of the radar signal, only a small fraction of the transmitted power arrives back at the receiver.
