Communication systems function by transmitting information as time varying electrical quantities of voltages or currents, the signals, which may be of either analogue or digital format. The study of signals is related to the way in which these are processed through a network or system.
By comparison, the study of networks or systems can be described in terms of analysis, synthesis and excitation. Analysis is used to determine the response of a given network to a given excitation. Synthesis is used to design a network to produce a given reponse from a given excitation.
