A number of years ago, Jesper Brodin, CEO of Ingka Group, IKEA, faced a difficult situation. He had been asked to take over responsibility for managing IKEA in China. After some months of analysis and reflection, he and the team came to the conclusion that the business was overly complex and needed simplification to be successful. Significant changes would have to be made in the short and midterm to ensure a strong business for future generations. These included closing offices which would require supporting a significant number of employees to find new employment. In a people-centered organization and business such as IKEA, where employees are valued like family, this was a difficult situation.
