There is ample room for originality in music scoring. But there is also much of convention. Convention is valuable in achieving the primary purpose of music scoring (or any other language), which is to communicate understanding. Convention does not prohibit creativity. Rather, it offers a comprehensible framework within which creativity can be concentrated, and through which it can have the most impact. Think of convention as a bang-for-the-buck proposition. As many music theory teachers have undoubtedly told their squirming and impatient music students, “You must learn the rules before you can break them intelligently.”
