Managed switches, which make Layer 2 switching possible in high-speed Ethernet networks, are critical in a corporate infrastructure. This chapter examines several features that are used with Layer 2 switches.
VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network)—This can be used to separate a group of computing devices from each other, even if those devices are on the same physical switch. A VLAN provides isolation among networking devices. Another name for a VLAN is a Layer 2 broadcast domain. Typically, each VLAN is associated with a separate and unique IP subnetwork address.
