2 Why computational bioacoustics?

Introduction

In order to explain better the scope and purpose of computational bioacoustics, we need to trace back its roots to bioacoustics, a cross-disciplinary research topic established a century ago. Because the scope and purpose of early bioacoustics, and thus the range of problems addressed, have changed significantly during the past century of development and advances, we will also need to outline the scope and the research problems studied by contemporary bioacoustics.
