Nanophotonics is a new, rapidly growing field that provides opportunities in understanding the interaction between light and matter on a nanoscale level smaller than the wavelength of radiation. It is the science and engineering of photonics at the nanometer scale. In other words, it is a combination of photonics and nanotechnology. Nanophotonics involves the interaction of light with structures smaller than about 100 nm. Indeed, it offers challenging opportunities for studying the fundamental processes of interaction between the radiation field and matter on a scale much smaller than the wavelength of radiation.
