7 Mathematical modeling

Abstract: Examples of the numerical solution of model problems from various fields of science and engineering are presented in this chapter. All research begins with the mathematical formulation of a problem and the selection of a numerical method. The programs developed here are implemented using the GSL scientific library. The numerical results are visualized employing gnuplot.

7.1 Approximation of experimental data

The problem of constructing an approximate function for a set of one-dimensional data is formulated and solved. The polynomial approximation including the least squares fitting of polynomials is considered.
