1 The Internet Model
This chapter will provide an overview of communication protocols that are necessary for transfer of data between or among communicating nodes (computers) connected through networks. An application program generates a continuous stream of data, which cannot be sent over a network as a continuous stream, but must be packetized per defined protocol and then sent over the network. Therefore, communicating nodes exchange packets of data over the network. Each of the packets is delineated with a header, contents, and a trailer.
