28. Playing Music Online
You don’t have to own a song or album to play it on your PC. There’s another way to listen to music on your computer—online, via streaming music services.
A streaming music service is the online equivalent of listening to AM or FM radio. In some instances you choose the music you want to listen to; in other cases, you just sit back and listen to whatever’s served up—just like old school radio.
What makes streaming music different from downloading or ripping music is that you don’t store any files on your computer; it all comes at you in real time, over the Internet. It’s a great way to hear a lot of music at relatively low cost.
