This chapter outlines the qualifications and experience required to be a teacher and describes the pay scales in the teaching profession. Insight on career progression paths within and out of the school environment are covered and advice is offered on where to find a teaching job and on places to recruit teachers.

Having read through this book, and noted in Chapter 2 the qualifications and training in the person specification of the job adverts, we will now develop this and look at qualifications and experience required in greater detail.
What now follows is the most up-to-date guidance on becoming a teacher from the DfE (Figure 4.1).
