When a program executes, it interacts with its environment. The security policy allows some interactions and disallows others. The confinement problem deals with prevention of processes from taking disallowed actions. Beginning with Lampson’s characterization of this problem, this chapter continues with a discussion of methods for confinement such as virtual machines and sandboxes.
