The basics of materials

Texture, colour and pattern animate shape. While the use of ‘white card’ can offer some sense of spatial arrangement and the dynamics of space, it is absolutely true that until surface texture is applied it is impossible to understand the full effect of form. At its simplest even the most regular and measured deployment of rectilinear forms can become chaotic and dynamic when colour or texture is applied that subverts its orderliness. Or the design that seems spacious when executed in white card may look overbearing or claustrophobic when rendered in muddy browns. Even here colour alone is not sufficient; one might say that a wooden oak floor and a muddy surface both share similar colours but the sanded shiny texture ...
