Composition, cameras, rendering and resolution
As has already been described, rendering is the process by which the computer creates a detailed image of a view (or animation) of the scene, usually including the effect of light, textures and reflections, all of which are not generally shown in the interactive part of the modeller. It is the means to check the detail and effect of models as you make them and produce the final images for showing to the production team. More importantly the creation, placement and use of cameras is a very important tool for understanding the dynamics of how a scene will be viewed, a vital part of the design process. When one is composing a render one is also considering the composition of the whole design.
