THE DISPLAY OF a single variable in space represents one of the earliest applications of computer graphics to the display of behavior. These techniques have evolved from simple color coding and contour displays to newer 3-D visualization techniques. The trends in this area are toward a better understanding of scalar variables throughout a full 3-D domain. Most scalar visualization techniques use a consistent approach across one-, two-, or three-dimensional fields.
