In the time since the third edition of this book no new light source has entered the field. However, the light-emitting diode (LED) has made great strides. Some argue that it is the only real advance in lamp technology in the past 100 years. Its history can be traced back to 1907 to a researcher named H. J. Round, who worked for Marconi Labs and noticed that electro-luminescence was produced from a crystal of silicon carbide when electricity was applied to it. A Russian independently created the first LED in the mid-1920s but the discovery was ignored in the US and England.
