Adaptive Server IQ with Multiplex
The challenge of efficiently processing large volumes of data has led to increasing sophistication in relational database system optimizers. Optimizer improvements have been accompanied by new methods of reducing the amount of work to be done, such as range partitioning, concatenated indexes, and more exotic technologies like join indexes and materialized views. These subjects are discussed in Chapter 8.
Sybase Adaptive Server IQ with Multiplex (IQ-M) takes a very different approach to solving this problem. Instead of storing data in rows, IQ-M stores data in columns. The full set of data for a column is stored in a single entity called a column vector.
