Process Model
An XPS database consists of one or more cooperating instances called coservers. The database server processes that actually do the work are called virtual processors since they behave somewhat like CPUs in scheduling multiple threads to service user applications.
Coservers
The processing hub in Informix XPS is the coserver, an entity consisting of one or more CPUs, shared memory, and disk space. A coserver can run in a physical node, such as a server in a cluster, or as a logical node in a large SMP system. In this section we consider the characteristics of a coserver, the architectural model on which it is based, and the way users connect to coservers.
