Basis of a Sizing Estimate
You may expect application suppliers or RDBMS suppliers to be able to offer meaningful sizing guidelines with their own products. But unfortunately, that’s not always the case. Suppliers can be experts in their own product without having detailed knowledge of all the hardware platforms on which the product may be deployed.
Systems integrators and major consulting practices typically have specialist staff who can help with the sizing process. (Sun does, too: SunPS—the Sun professional services group.) If your sizing is based more on guesswork than concrete data, it’s probably a good time to call in consultants. Sometimes a little expenditure up front can avoid major pain later.
