Data Layout Strategies
The main objective of data layout is to avoid disk bottlenecks by spreading disk I/O evenly across all available disks. You need to avoid one disk being fully utilized while others are idle. Never lose sight of this objective and always refer back to it!
At the same time you need to make sure you achieve the desired level of availability. Fortunately, taking availability into account does not undermine any of the principles involved in planning an effective data layout strategy.
