Performance Problem Identification

Don’t decide your hardware is underconfigured until you’ve eliminated the other possibilities. Application issues can be major causes of performance problems and are an excellent starting point for an investigation.

Begin by understanding your limitations. Unless you are a kernel engineer working for Sun or Oracle, you probably can’t change the internal architecture of the operating system or the database, so remove this ambition from your checklist. It makes sense to focus on the things you can fix and bypass the things you can’t. But you might be able to fix problems with the user environment, with database layout, or with tuning.
