Vector Field Theory for Depth and Transverse Resolution of a CSOM
We derived a scalar theory in Chapter 3 for the depth and transverse response of a confocal microscope. In this Appendix, we will derive these results by using the full vector field theory of Richards and Wolf.1 We shall also show that the depth response V(z) derived from the vector field theory is identical to that obtained from scalar theory. However, there are slight differences between the results obtained by the two methods for the transverse response. The derivation is very similar to that used in the scalar theory. In the vector theory, however, the lens is assumed to be illuminated by a rectilinear quasi-monochromatic plane wave linearly polarized in the x
