Waves travel with a definite speed through a uniform medium. Also, if we watch a single spot, we see that the waves pass the spot at regular intervals of time. In wave motion, factors such as wave speed, frequency, phase, wavelength and amplitude must be considered.

The speed of a wave is the distance it advances in unit time. The number of waves that pass a point per unit time is the frequency of the wave motion. The time required for a single wave to pass is called the time period T of the wave motion. The wavelength λ is the distance between two adjacent particles that are in the same phase.
