Instant messaging is the ability to instantly communicate with someone over the Internet via voice or text. It differs from traditional email in that instant messaging operates in real time and you can actually see when your friends are online. There is no waiting for a response, because if your friends or colleagues are online, they will be instantly notified of your message and will be able to reply right back to you.
