In the introduction to Chapter 5, we discussed the following situation. Suppose
that in the past few years, Mr. Holmes has noticed that frequently earth-
quakes have caused his burglar alarm to sound. The burglar alarm concerns
his home but it is wired sound in his office, which is some distance from his
home. Presently, he is sitting in his office, and the burglar alarm sounds. He
then rushes home, assuming that there is a good chance that his residence has
been burglarized. On the way home, he hears on the radio that there has been
