The UK is alone in Europe with its house-buying obsession. Many people in the UK purchase houses as a commodity/pension/financial asset/income, with ‘home’ being last on the priority list. By doing this, we have been deluding ourselves for many decades. Elation at house-price growth has given way to the surprisingly slow realisation that not only will our children and grandchildren be unable to buy a house (without a large inheritance), but that even an extra bedroom has become simply unaffordable.
